Investors are optimistic about mining’s prospects in 2025, with most saying Donald Trump’s second presidency will boost the US industry and spur global demand, Mining Journal Intelligence’s (MJI) Investor Sentiment 2025: What Trump 2.0 Means for Mining report shows.

Nearly two-thirds (63.6%) of investors expect an improved performance by mining stocks this year, following mixed results in 2024, according to the report, which provides exclusive insights into the plans, priorities and preferences of mining investors, along with top factors influencing investment decisions in 2025.

Findings are based on results of MJI’s annual Investor Sentiment Survey, which was this year completed by a record 138 institutional and retail mining investors, tapping into the leading client base of Mining Journal and sister publications produced by publisher Aspermont.

About four in five investors said Trump’s policies will benefit the US mining industry, with most (59.1%) saying his presidency will also be positive for global mineral demand.

But on the global front, many respondents were unconvinced. “While the US and most of North America will be fine, there will be a retraction in metals demand worldwide in 2025,” one said.

MJI’s new-look Investor Sentiment report also reveals investors’ top-pick commodities and geographies primed for investment this year and the top factors influencing investment trends and decisions in 2025.

In a new addition, the report also provides a snapshot of investors’ views on ESG in mining – including priority ESG themes the industry needs to build on and an assessment of overall ESG performance by mining companies. It also assesses investors’ views on the outlook for M&A in mining this year.

The Investor Sentiment Report 2025 gauges the shifting attitudes of the investor community toward the resources sector. Through a survey focused on investment amounts, returns and preferences – including for specific commodities, geographies, and project stages – the report paints a picture of where investors are placing capital in the industry.

Results enable investors to see how their peers are operating and provide resources equities with an indication of where the money is moving and how best to position themselves to attract a bigger piece of the investment pie.

Methodology

The report is based on Mining Journal Intelligence’s annual Investor Sentiment Survey, distributed to the Mining Journal network and those of sister publications of publisher Aspermont.

The survey is focused on key themes affecting the industry and investment volumes, returns, preferred geographies, commodities and project stages, alongside key factors affecting investment decisions.
