The tailings reckoning

Why the mining sector must rethink tailings risk

Mining Journal, Mining Magazine, and Australia’s Mining Monthly are excited to announce:

Tailings Report 2025 is here!

For the past five years, Mining Magazine and Australia’s Mining Monthly have delivered an industry leading research whitepaper into the market to tackle the major challenges around tailings storage facilities (TSFs). Prompted by the tragic Brumadinho collapse from early 2019 in Brazil (following the Mariana disaster in 2015), the first research effort was driven by a need to understand the TSF landscape in more detail, but subsequent publications have focused on a range of issues such as investor engagement, waterless tailings and tailings reprocessing. These papers have become essential reading on the operational side of the sector, and increasingly a concerned investor community.

Areas covered in the report:

⦁    Technology vs Cultural evolution for lasting results
⦁    New designs for true safety
⦁    Standards and stakeholders – TSFs for communities, operators and investors
⦁    TSFs in a changing climate
⦁    What’s next
